Many years ago, James, the brother of Jesus, wrote,

“And now I have a word for you who brashly announce, ‘Today—at the latest, tomorrow—we’re off to such and such a city for the year. We’re going to start a business and make a lot of money.’ You don’t know the first thing about tomorrow. You’re nothing but a wisp of fog, catching a brief bit of sun before disappearing. Instead, make it a habit to say, ‘If the Master wills it and we’re still alive, we’ll do this or that.’” (James 4:13-15 MSG)

Wow! That totally fits the year we’ve experienced, doesn’t it?

It’s been a while since we communicated with you about Breathe Life Ministries. We wanted to. But honestly, we did not see 2020 going the way it did, and I’m guessing you didn’t either. The year started with some fantastic church leadership retreats we got to lead in January and February, then quickly turned to major back surgery for Jamie in mid-February, and then Covid!

In May, God audaciously invited us to believe in creating a retreat hub near Brenham, TX to minister to the coming wave of exhausted church leaders whose hearts still beat with the mission of Jesus. Though that hasn’t happened (yet), God has patiently been busy drawing our hearts closer to his to fill us for the work of today with gifts the world cannot give, but so desperately needs. While we await God’s timing for retreat land, he continues to send us to people in their places to do this needful work.

We just celebrated the 3-year birthday of Breathe Life Ministries in November. Thank you, Jesus! And thank you for your support! Here’s some of what we have been blessed to be part of:

  • Watched Jesus love and free three different ministry couples during private retreats
  • Shared our message of rest, healing, and play in nine churches in three states
  • Provided a soul-care multi-day event for Texas youth directors
  • Led leadership events for three church leadership teams
  • Been present at four conferences to meet and support leaders
  • Met in person and virtually with over 30 individuals to breathe life into them in their unique life and leadership journeys

While there is much uncertainty in our world today, we are confident God is up to great good in the church and the world! He has solidified our hearts in Breathe Life’s calling to

cultivate space where the Lord sets his beloved free so they live in fullness.

This is our mission in every conversation, retreat, event, post, and writing we do, because a leader healed, freed, and living in the fullness of Jesus is a powerful force for good that cannot be overcome by darkness!

We intend to spend the next 6 months (if the Lord wills!):

  1. investing in a few close partnerships to strengthen our resolve & expand our impact
  2. developing & organizing our tools & resources (be watching for a book…and more blogs)
  3. intentionally reengaging our audience with the presence and patience of God

We also intend to communicate more with you, the people who believe in the work we are doing; and to do so even when we don’t have all our ducks in a row. We thank you for your support and prayers. We cannot go and cultivate space for leaders to be transformed by the living God without you and your support!

King David penned words that pretty accurately describe where we see ourselves coming out of 2020 and headed into 2021. We hope you will join us in our mission, and in this new song of praise, for such a time as this!

I waited and waited and waited some more,
patiently, knowing God would come through for me.
Then, at last, he bent down and listened to my cry.
He stooped down to lift me out of danger
from the desolate pit I was in,
out of the muddy mess I had fallen into.
Now he’s lifted me up into a firm, secure place
and steadied me while I walk along his ascending path.
A new song for a new day rises up in me
every time I think about how he breaks through for me!
Ecstatic praise pours out of my mouth until
everyone hears how God has set me free.
Many will see his miracles;
they’ll stand in awe of God and fall in love with him!
